Susan K. (Kathy) Land

President & CEO, IEEE

Susan K. (Kathy) Land is a Program Manager for the U.S. Department of Defense’s Missile Defense Agency. She has more than 30 years of industry experience in the application of software engineering methodologies, the management of information systems, and leadership of software development teams.

Kathy served as the 2018 Vice President, IEEE Technical Activities. She also served two additional terms on the IEEE Board of Directors as Division VIII Director/Delegate in 2011 and 2012 and as Division V Director/Delegate in 2014 and 2015. She was President of the IEEE Computer Society in 2009. Kathy was a member of the IEEE-USA Board of Directors in 2013 and 2016. Kathy has been an active member of the IEEE Standards Association for more than 20 years and served as the Computer Society Vice President for Standards in 2004. She was the recipient of the 2007 IEEE Standards Medallion.

An IEEE Fellow, Kathy is the author and co-author of a number of texts and publications supporting software engineering principles and the practical application of software process methodologies. She is an IEEE-HKN Member and IEEE Computer Society Richard E. Merwin Award recipient.

K. J. Ray Liu is a Distinguished University Professor and Christine Kim Eminent Professor of Information Technology at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research contributions encompass broad aspects of signal processing and communications, with a recent focus on AI for wireless sensing and indoor tracking. Over the past decades, he has trained 68 doctoral/postdoctoral students, of which 10 are now IEEE fellows, and most of whom are active members of major universities and successful entrepreneurs/engineers worldwide. Dr. Liu is the founder and President of Origin Wireless, that pioneers wireless AI for wireless sensing and indoor tracking with over 100 patents filed or granted. The invention of wireless AI won the prestigious 2017 CEATEC Grand Prix and three CES Innovation Awards, including CES Best of Innovation in 2021. Dr. Liu was the 2019 IEEE Vice President for Technical Activities and a member of IEEE Board of Director as Division IX Director in 2016-2017. He has also served as 2012-2013 President of IEEE Signal Processing Society, where he was Vice President for Publications and Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. Dr. Liu is a recipient of two IEEE Technical Field Awards: the 2021 IEEE Fourier Award for Signal Processing and the 2016 IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate Teaching Award. Dr. Liu received the B.S. degree from the National Taiwan University in 1983, and the Ph.D. degree from UCLA in 1990, both in electrical engineering. He is a Fellow of IEEE, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the U.S. National Academy of Inventors.

Deepak Mathur is Director of IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific Region). IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. He has also served in many leadership roles in IEEE at Section, Council, Region and MGA (Member Geographic Activities). Deepak was IEEE India Council Chair in 2015-16. Deepak, former Chief General Manager of ONGC (India’s premier public sector company engaged in exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons), has more than 37-years of professional experience in fields of electronics, telecommunication, IT infrastructure and has held various engineering and managerial positions. He has successfully done planning and executions of several IT projects like SCADA, on-line/real-time monitoring systems, IT Infrastructure creation, Wi-Max based broadband wireless access system, GPS/GSM based vehicle tracking system etc. and has led teams of IT professionals and multi-disciplinary teams. He has also experience of managing and working on Hi-Tech (Oil) Well Logging Systems which is to analyze the properties of subsurface to explore the possibility of hydrocarbons. Deepak has Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics and Communications from IIT (India Institute of Technology), Roorkee and an MBA. He has also completed Advance Management Program from IIM (India Institute of Management), Calcutta.

Deepak is recipient of prestigious IEEE Region 10 Outstanding Volunteer Award and IEEE MGA Achievement Award. Deepak is also a member of IEEE-HKN or Eta Kappa Nu (ΗΚΝ), which is the international honor society of the IEEE. “The organization promotes excellence in the profession and in education through an emphasis on scholarship, character, and attitude.” Membership is a lifelong designation for individuals who have distinguished themselves as students or as professionals in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, and other fields of IEEE interest.

Kukjin Chun is now a professor Emeritus at Seoul National University in Korea. He served the Vice-President of IEEE MGA and IEEE Region10 Director. He also served as a general chair of 2015 IEEE SENSORS conference and a member of the International Steering Committee Member of the IEEE International Conference on Solid-State Sensors, Actuators, and Microsystems. He is Life Fellow of IEEE and He received the Order of Science and Technology Merit of Korea in 2017.

Akinori Nishihara (IEEE Life Fellow) received B.E., M.E., and Dr. Eng. degrees in Electronics from Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) in 1973,1975, and 1978, respectively. He worked for Tokyo Tech since 1978 in Department of Physical Electronics, International Cooperation Center for Science and Technology, Center for Research and Development of Educational Technology, and Department of Human System Science. His research interests are in signal processing and educational technology. He is Professor Emeritus since his retirement in 2016. He currently works for Tokyo Tech Academy for Super Smart Society as Chief Operating Officer. He has been a volunteer on IEEE Region 10 Executive Committee since 1995, and served as IEEE Region 10 Director (2019-2020). He is now Region 10 Past Director and IEICE Auditor. He received IEEE Third Millennium Medal (2000), Tokyo Institute of Technology Best Teacher Award (2009), Tokyo Institute of Technology Best Engineering Teacher Award (2014), and IEEE Region 10 Outstanding Volunteer Award (2015).

Simay Akar is an entrepreneur with reputable corporate industrial background and experience in the energy industry. She specialized in photovoltaic manufacturing, battery storage for electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies and the clean energy market development.

Akar is currently the Chief Commercial Officer & Co-Founder at Innoses.

Her past roles include Sales & Marketing Director of EkoRE – Eko Renewable Energy and Marketing & Business Development Director of GoodWe Turkey, Head of Overseas Marketing at Talesun Solar. Akar has worked in China and Turkey and mostly focused on international commercial activities and has been employed by CSUN Eurasia, Schneider Electric, Arcelik (BEKO), and Lucida Solar. In addition to her professional acclimates, she is an IEEE Senior member, acknowledged volunteer since 2007. Simay is a graduate of Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey and she participated in the Energy Innovation and Emerging Technologies Program at Stanford University.

Dr. Zia Ahmed obtained his PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia in 1990. Dr. Zia has served as an R10 EXCOM for ten years enabling him to interact with members from all over R10, and with that, he learns immensely about the region and core issues of importance to members and observes R10 operation closely. Dr. Zia has an assertion that “we can’t afford to compromise on the high standards of knowledge and technical skills required by our members in today’s extremely competitive world as there are ample opportunities for R10 to improve and/or take a completely new approach in some areas”. In 2019, Dr. Zia served IEEE Region 10 as Vice-Chair (Members Activities) which oversees R10 Women-In-Engineering (WIE), Young Professionals (YP), and Student activities. For 2021-2022, he is the IEEE R10 Vice-Chair (Technical Activities) and his team consists of Chairs of the following R10 committees: Technical Conferences & Conference Quality Management, Industry Relations, Awards & Recognitions, Humanitarian Activities, and R10 Information Management Committees.

Byung-Gook Park received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electronics Engineering from Seoul National University (SNU) in 1982 and 1984, respectively, and Ph. D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1990. From 1990 to 1993, he worked at the AT&T Bell Laboratories. From 1993 to 1994, he was with Texas Instruments. In 1994, he joined SNU as an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he is currently a professor.

Toshio Fukuda is a professor of mechatronics engineering at Meijo University in Nagoya, Japan. He is also a professor at Waseda University and professor emeritus at Nagoya University. His research focuses on intelligent robotic systems and micro-nano robotics. He has published more than 2,000 articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings, and reports. An IEEE Fellow, Toshio was director of IEEE Region 10 in 2013 and 2014 and IEEE Division X director/delegate in 2001 and 2002, and 2017 and 2018. He was president of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society in 1988 and 1989 and general chair of the IEEE International Symposium on Micro- Nano Mechatronics from 1990 to 2012. He has served on several IEEE boards and committees. He graduated from Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan and received the Master of Engineering degree and the Doctor of Engineering degree both from the University of Tokyo. He joined the National Mechanical Engineering Laboratory in Japan in 1977, the Science University of Tokyo in 1981, and then joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Nagoya University, Japan in 1989.

Dr. Chua Wen-Shyan is currently the Head of Malaysian Smart Factory 4.0 under the Selangor Human Resource Development Centre (SHRDC). He obtained his Ph.D. in Control Systems Engineering and B.Eng. in Mechatronics Engineering from Monash University Malaysia. His key area of expertise lies mainly in the area of Control and Automation Systems, Fault Detection and Identification (FDI), and Predictive Maintenance Strategies; which are widely used in Industry 4.0 applications. He is also appointed by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) in collaboration with the Machinery and Equipment Productivity Nexus (MEPN) as one of the mentors (advisors) for the PRODUCTIVITY1010 initiative to support the industries in their journey towards digital transformation.

As the Head of Malaysian Smart Factory 4.0, Dr. Chua and his team are focused in delivering high impact talent development programs to accelerate the growth of local talents who would be the workforce in supporting the growth of Industry 4.0. The programs developed by his team at the Malaysian Smart Factory 4.0 are also able to support the industries and community towards achieving sustainable digital transformation through high impact talent development strategies.

Dr. Rakesh Kumar

Dr. Rakesh Kumar is a semiconductor industry veteran, an entrepreneur, and an educator. He is the founder, President and CEO of TCX Technology Connexions. He also educates and mentors potential engineering entrepreneurs at UCSD. Dr. Kumar has authored the book “Fabless Semiconductor Implementation”, published by McGraw Hill. He is an IEEE Life Fellow and was inducted into the IEEE Technical Activities Hall of Honor in 2018. He is currently Chair of IEEE Roadmaps Committee, Co-Chair of the DataPort Steering committee, and has been President of the Solid-State Circuits Society (2012-13). He was Vice Program Chair for the 2017 Sections Congress. During 40+ years in the semiconductor industry he has been VP&GM at Cadence Design, and has held various technical and management positions at Unisys and Motorola. He received the Ph.D. M.S. and B.S diplomas in EE in 1974, 1971 and 1969 respectively, and an Executive “MBA” from UCSD in 1989.

Samarth Deo works for Hitachi Energy in Sweden as an R&D Project Manager. He started his career as an R&D Software Developer and took over as R&D Manager in 2018, where he was responsible for development and maintenance of the MACH (Modular Advanced Control of HVDC) computer, which is known as the brain of HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) control and protection system.

Samarth did his MSc. thesis on Phasor Measurement Unit in 2013 while pursuing master’s from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. His area of focus is Embedded Systems, with emphasis on Real Time Operating Systems and Digital Signal Processing. He joined Hitachi Energy (ABB back then) right after. His thesis work is partly used in HVDC projects around the world. In 2021, he joined in his current role, where he wears several hats during the day and is the key responsible person for R&D Operations within Grid and Power Quality Solutions worldwide.

Samarth is an active IEEE member and executed the first EPICS in IEEE project in Region 10, back in 2010-2011. He is currently the Chair of EPICS in IEEE Committee and the immediate past Chair of IEEE Sweden Section. In 2015, he was awarded the “IEEE Region 8 Exceptional Young Professionals Volunteer Award.”

Dr. Aishwarya Bandla heads the Translational Core at The N.1 Institute for Health at the National University of Singapore (NUS). A multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians, her research group focuses on wearable bioengineering solutions for disease prevention in the oncology and neurology spectrum. Dr. Bandla holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from NUS, has published her research in international peer-reviewed journals and has won several research conference presentation awards. She represented NUS in the Global Young Scientist’s Summit 2018, a multi- disciplinary platform for conversations on science and research, technology innovation and society, and solutions to global challenges. Aishwarya was also featured in GovInsider’s global 50 women in tech 2020 and the inaugural Singapore’s 100 Women in Tech list 2020, which celebrates women who have made significant contributions to tech in Singapore and for their ability to influence, inspire and impact on community and industry. Aishwarya, an IEEE senior member, serves as the Professional Activities Chair, IEEE Singapore. She is also part of the executive committee of the IEEE Women in Engineering WiE Asia Pacific, Singapore and IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology chapter Singapore. As a circle leader in the Lean In Singapore community, Aishwarya is passionate about motivating professionals to “pay it forward” by mentoring peers and young people.

THITTAPORN GANOKRATANAA (Member, IEEE) received the B.Sc. degree (First Class Honors) in Media Technology from King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi in 2015, and the M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Chulalongkorn University in 2017 and 2021. She is currently a lecturer in the Applied Computer Science program, Department of Mathematics, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi with a specialization in computer vision, machine learning, and human-computer interaction.

She is the Session Chair of SITIS2019, APSIPA2020, JCSSE 2021, 2021 WorldS4, and MMM2022. She is the Technical Program Committee and Reviewer of various international journals, including IJECE, BEEI, IJEECS, TELKOMNIKA, IEEE Access, and Pattern Recognition Letters. She is currently a Student Activities Committee (SAC) of IEEE Region10 and MGA SAC Awards Committee. She was the President of the IEEE HKN Mu Theta Chapter and the Organizing Committee of SITIS 2016, iSAI-NLP 2017, SITIS 2018, MMM 2018, and SITIS 2019.

Professor Suranga Nanayakkara received his PhD in 2010 and BEng in 2005 from the National University of Singapore. In 2011, Suranga founded the “Augmented Human Lab” to explore ways of designing intelligent human-computer interfaces that extend the limits of our perceptual and cognitive capabilities.

His work is most important to the people whose lives it most directly impacts: those who face challenged to function in the world due to sensory deficits in hearing or vision. What also makes Suranga’s contributions important is that they are not only applicable to those specific communities. Because of his emphasis on “enabling” rather than “fixing,” the technologies that Suranga has developed have a potentially much broader range of applications. Suranga is a Distinguished Speaker and a Senior Member of ACM and has been involved in a number of roles, including the General Chair of the Augmented Human Conference in 2015 and on many review and program committees including SIG CHI, TEI, and UIST. For the totality and breadth of achievements, he has won many awards including young inventor under 35 (TR35 award) in the Asia Pacific region by MIT TechReview, Outstanding Young Persons of Sri Lanka (TOYP), INK Fellowship 2016, and Research Excellence Medal by the University of Auckland in 2020.

I am an engineering graduate, with management education and a PhD in Innovation. My 28 years of experience is in Innovation and Technology Management in India, Singapore and The Netherlands in various roles including new product and services development, project management, hardware, software and systems, Intellectual property, people and customer management with more than 20 patents in various stages. I have worked at Philips Netherlands, Europe, Philips India, HCL and TTK. As a part of my consulting firm PRASU, I have consulted for top companies, many in automotive technology to help develop a culture of Innovation, build Innovation skills, and generate business relevant Innovations and intellectual property. I have been very actively engaged in the start-up sphere, by mentoring and supporting multiple start-ups, innovation centres, accelerators, and incubators in multiple domains. I have also worked closely with academia and innovation, being a part of academic councils forging stronger industry academia collaboration. My PhD by research is titled “An integrated framework for Innovation talent management” focusing on Innovation & Intrapreneurship, specifically in scaling and managing business relevant Innovation. Also have developed a unique innovation talent assessment and management method. I am also a TEDx and an International speaker, speak regularly at multiple forums, universities, and conferences, won several awards and recognitions. I am a long-standing volunteer at IEEE, PMI and Women in Big Data. I am also a cartoonist and actor.

He has served at several IEEE leadership positions such as SSCS YP Committee Chair, IEEE YP Vice Chair/TAB YP rep, Benelux YP and Professional activities Chair, Denmark student rep, founder and chair of Technical University of Denmark and Sabanci University student branches.

He is currently the Director of RFFE Design at pSemi/Murata in San Diego focusing on 5G RF front end integrated circuits for flagship smartphones with over 30 pending and granted patents, after experiences at Intel, Broadcom, Marvel, German Aerospace Center and a startup as a lead designer for 10-100Gb/s wireline and wireless transceivers. He is the author and co-author of several ISSCC and JSSC papers, a book chapter on data converters, IEEE R8 student paper contest (SPC) finalist and IEEE Denmark SPC best paper award recipient.

Emiliya serves as the Programme Analyst with UNV Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific since March 2018 where she is supporting countries and multitude of partners in promoting volunteerism and ensuring that more people have spaces for volunteering and their volunteer efforts are recognized. Prior to this Emiliya joined UNV RO since the opening of the office in August 2015 as International UN Volunteer Youth Programme Specialist in Bangkok. Prior to that she has worked with UNDP Governance Section and UN Coordination Office in Uzbekistan. She has extensive programme experience on youth and volunteering as well as social innovation and stakeholder engagement.

Prof. Christian Enoval is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering and Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in 2011 and 2015 respectively. He is a candidate for Ph.D. in Technology Management at the Technological University of the Philippines. He is currently working as Service Manager under the Singtel Enterprise Business of Singtel Philippines, Inc. (Singapore Telecommunications Ltd). He is also an Associate Professorial Lecturer under the Electronics Engineering Department of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. In addition, Prof. Enoval is an IEEE Senior Member and holds several positions in different IEEE groups. He is the founding and current Chair of IEEE Young Professionals Philippines, the Public Relations Officer and Society Committee Chair of IEEE Republic of Philippines Section, and the Training and Webinar Coordinator of IEEE Region 10 Student Activities Committee (SAC). He has spearheaded many IEEE events in Philippines and in Asia Pacific Region promoting collaborations between young professionals and student members and has conducted activities for student development. Moreover, he had been invited as guest speaker during the IEEE Young Professionals Meet 2020 organized by IEEE YP Bangladesh and during the SYWL Congress 2020 as well under the YP track. "Sabarinath Pillai is an academician with over 17 years of experience and presently is full tenure Asst. Professor at St. Joseph's College of Engineering and Technology. He teaches and mentors students, both at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels in achieving higher scales of their potential. Sabarinath is a vibrant volunteer to the IEEE community and has served many responsibilities, creating a significant positive impact to the communities he serves. He has served as the Chair of Student Activities Committee, Chair of Young Professionals AG, Secretary and as Section Vice-Chair to IEEE Kerala Section. His contributions in these positions lead to a 50% increase in Student membership which translated to 10% increase in Young Professionals in Kerala Section over the years. He provided leadership to close to 1500 student branch events, personally travelling across the state to 91 Student Branches to encourage student volunteers and boost their spirits. As Secretary and as Vice-Chair of Kerala Section, his significant contribution in leading the section to bag the MGA Outstanding Large Section Award and R10 Outstanding Large Section Award needs special mention, both in 2015 and in 2020. Presently, he serves as Vice-Chair to IEEE India Council Young Professionals. He also volunteers with the Internet Society, in the capacity of President, ISoC - Trivandrum Chapter.

He has held various management positions in NUS, including Head-Department of Electrical Engineering, Director–Computer Centre, Director–Centre for Instructional Technology. He was Executive Director of the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR) (2002-2006). He has been actively involved in IEEE activities, taking on numerous volunteer leadership positions, including VP-MGA (2015-2016), Region 10 Director (2011-2012), Singapore Section Chair (1993-1994), and Singapore Computer Chapter Chair (1987-1988).

She served as President of IEEE Canada in 2018 - 2019 and, in 2018, as Chair, Policy Track, IEEE Internet Initiative. Currently Adjunct Research Professor at Western University, she was the founding Director of the Bluewater Technology Access Centre (now Lambton Manufacturing Innovation Centre) following eight years as Dean at Lambton College with a number of portfolios: School of Technology and Applied Sciences, Business Development, Sustainable Development and Applied Research. Her strategic leadership in the development of the applied research & innovation capacity and portfolio led to Lambton College becoming one of the three top Research Colleges in Canada. She received a B.Eng. in informatics engineering from the Telkom University, Indonesia, an M.Eng. in electrical engineering from the North Sumatera University, Indonesia, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. Her current research focuses on sensor networks, machine learning and computational intelligence. She is a Senior Member of IEEE. David WONG Liang Tai (S ’11, M '14, SM '18) received the B. Eng. degree with honours in Computer Systems Engineering from Curtin University of Technology in 2007 and the M. Eng. degree in Integrated Circuits and Embedded Systems from National University of Singapore in 2014.

He was with Panasonic Corporation as a Research and Development engineer cum technical lead from 2008 to 2011. He is currently a researcher in National University of Singapore. Mr. Manodya Nabadawewa is a Passionate Volunteer, moderator and a Young Leader representing Youth and Technological volunteering organizations in Sri Lanka. He is currently serving as the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovations of 5th Sri Lanka National Youth Parliament.

He is the Founding Chairman of initial IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Student Branch Chapter in Sri Lanka and He was able to merge two major youth and tech organizations in Sri Lanka as the Project Chairman of Leo-IEEE Sinhalen Docs.

This year He is serving as the Chairman of IEEE Innovation Nation Sri Lanka, which is a national project under IEEE Sri Lanka Section Students Activities Committee.
